Final Statement about the contest from the jury
|
The Jury received a great amount of designs, proposals for special cars like restaurant or lounge cars,
new seat or standing creations, environment friendly- and luxury trains. All in all we have received more
than 5000 completely different designs, from radically simple to highly developed ones, which did not make
the jury selection easy! The Jury was especially impressed by two facts. First, that all designers and
designs have put the passengers and their needs first. And second: the high level of innovation. All
members of the jury liked the Bombardier YouRail Designcontest and want to show you all their appreciation
by simply saying "Thank you all!"

A comprehensive coach design with many innovative features!

Jury statement

This design features a lot of new ideas for long- distance trains.
One of them is that the passenger is seen as a standing figure which
not only benefits the passenger himself, which is a real benefit of
rail travel as the passenger is not tied to one spot for the duration
of the journey. The designer also tried to bring more flexibility into
the inner train environment by allowing passengers to arrange their
seating individually Conceptual rather than aesthetic, this proposal
promotes a well-thought integrated concept of the overall medium/long
train journey, while offering a clear response to most needs encountered
on board. The zones are clearly defined, with a cleaver and localized
use of the natural light and outside openings, therefore helping the
user's orientation while breaking the routine and tunnel effect of most
common train wagon.

YOYO not only combines a unique design with an innovative idea it also
represents flexibility. The idea behind YOYO is that passengers’ quantity
defines YOYO’s inner looks by the number of seats. The idea of completely
open space and only absolutely necessary seats literally turns the original
seating concept upside down. Although the feasibility of this concept can be
debated (and it was!), this proposal takes the clear party of the innovation,
with a fresh review of the flexibility needed on the trains and commuters of
the future. As one main goal of any design contest remains to push the envelope
further, all agreed that this provocative idea did achieve this goal with "panache".

First Class Dinning Car is a charming design which was created with
a lot of love and passion. It combines traditional asian architecture
with an overwhelming lightness and transparency and this is exactly
what makes this design so special and innovative. Although the general
space configuration of this dinning car proposal remains somewhat
traditional, its treatment signature overcomes the usual expectations in
a truly unique interior design statement. "Romantic" by nature, this
concept offers to the passengers more than a simple train ride, but
rather a definite event on a long journey in line with the “Orient Express”
modern dream.

Pic Nic Train was inspired by the “mp3 generation”. It is open, bright and functional.
It is also very passenger orientated which makes it accessible to all ages and generations.
This environment friendly shuttle brought spirited freshness into our contest. With a clear
and smart statement for a specialized mandate, this inclusive proposal offers a well detailed
solution for all aspects of the "outdoor" commuter train, with an engaging marketing concept
to promote “Nature” to the urban citizen. This designer clearly understood that “a (neat)
image is worth a thousand words”.

An innovative design for long and over- night rail travels!

Jury statement

Rail Way Hotel Car shows us that trains and comfortable hotels can be easily combined
to an innovative design especially attractive for long and over-night rail travelers.
The duplex concept of a two storey apartment is a very interesting re- use of serviceable
rail vehicles. Sensitive to the recycling of used train cars, the designer proposed a
simple but unique “Nomadic Hotel” concept with private and compact, yet “open feel”
spaces. Although the sleeping quarters lost some ground to the increasingly fast pace
commuting flights between distant cities, this approach could suggest a new traveling
fashion promoting the discovery of various cities in few defined stops, in a similar
approach as the cruise boats touring the seas…An idea with great potential.

Clean, simple, inviting, relaxing!
Sharon Christians
|
|
Jury statement
|
|
This design reflects the modern traveler’s needs for luxurious travel with
latest technology and entertainment and allows us a little view into the
future: clean, simple, inviting and relaxing design which is exactly what
stressed-out passengers need. Offering an idealistic first class atmosphere
of the future, this proposal does take the party of exploiting the upcoming
technology for the welfare of the users (contrary to the often submission of
the user to technologies…). With a concept rather more conceptual than rational,
the designer took the clear party of pushing the “design innovation” side of
this contest, with a soothing overall feel. Should we start saving for the
upcoming “Nomadic Techno-Spa“?!

The luxury train ride of tomorrow!

|
The Business Lounge Concept represents a luxury train of tomorrow. It simplifies
the business class and creates this way a completely new lounge design which makes
travelling to a memorable experience. With somewhat of a retro-futuristic signature,
this proposal does remind us of the need for calm, relaxing and somewhat open
environment in our transportation means. Clean, minimalist with distinct organic
lines might be the key for a fresh and welcoming business travel atmosphere.

Very unique design- the feeling of moving through the city in a balcony!
Chris Antonopoulos
|
|
Jury statement
|
|
The innovation of the panotram is a new integrated experience in
which passengers can enjoy a relaxing ride either in the trains’
cabin or in its patios. Although not applicable to all cities and
climates, this indoor / outdoor concept brings an interesting point:
why should the city traveler disconnect him/herself from the urban
environment while reaching a destination, when one can “feel” a city
with all his/her senses, on a terrace or balcony? The overall design
signature could be treated in many variations but the concept remains
sound. A ride into the panotram does not only have the purpose of
transportation, but also gives passengers a wonderful possibility
to explore and observe their environment.

Impressive because of its simplicity and modularity!
Karsten Henze

|
Jury statement
|
|
This innovative design impressed the Jury especially because of its
simplicity and modularity. A various number of seat variations can
be reached by arranging and changing basic seat elements differently.
A simple but well thought concept which confirm the need to further meet
the combined needs of the user AND the service provider. “Modularity”
can be modern, interesting and avoid visual repetition after all.

Winners - Configured Designs - 1st, 2nd and 3rd Prize
|
Jury statement
|
|
For the jury the most important criteria for determining the
three winning configured designs was the fit of the created
seat pattern to the shape of the seat. Therefore the jury
picked three designs which are characterized by their simplicity,
the suitability of their colors and the design fit to the shape
of the given 3-D seat. The jury was really impressed by the
quantity, diversity and quality of the configured designs and
intensively discussed them in order to select the final winners.

Jury statement

This innovative seating arrangement maximizes the available
passenger’s space while providing individual space and stability.
Simple and clever, this concept takes into consideration the needs
of the urban daily commuter, while offering a versatile solution
that can accommodate compact rush-hour crowds as well as the
need for seats when space allows or needs require. All while
keeping in mind the flow of circulation. A great solution for
both, the user and the service provider. Well done! As very
innovative idea which is easy to implement as well, the design
was picked by the president of Bombardier, Andrè Navarri- without
knowing that the community voted for it as well!

How are the winners determined?
The winners of the design contest are selected by a jury of high-profile experts from Bombardier and experts in the fields of design and transportation. In this determination process the jury will evaluate the creativity and the quality of the designs in accordance with the contest topic and consider criteria such as degree of innovation, applicability or business impact. An expert evaluation as well as the community evaluation will support the jury members in making their decision yet do not have direct influence on the determination of the winning designs.
